maryland-gutter-repairIn Maryland, many homeowners don’t realize how important it is to check their gutters and down spouts on a regular basis. In addition to cleaning your gutters and downspouts, it is important to check for proper water flow and to make sure that your gutters and downspouts are secured properly to the house. Improper water flow and clogs will add weight to your gutters causing them to pull loose from the house.  Improperly installed or maintained gutters will lead to rotted wood and other costly home repairs.

Here are some tips to keep your gutters in top performing condition.

  1. Clean your gutters thoroughly removing all debris. Once clean, use a water hose to make sure gutters are draining properly. If you have standing water in your gutters, they may need to be repositioned for proper water flow or you may need to clean or unclog your downspouts.
  2. Check your gutters and downspouts to make sure they are secured to the fascia board or your home. Check your downspout elbows to make sure they are secured together properly. Also check the back of your downspouts to make sure the seams are not split.
  3. Flush all of your down spouts with a hose. To make sure that your down spout is clear of leafs and clogs, drop a small metal object like a penny down the spout to make sure it goes all the way to the bottom. If it doesn’t reach the bottom, you may have a small clog in your downspout which could lead to rotted wood, mold etc…
  4. Make sure that you have splash blocks or drain hoses leading the water away from your home and foundation. Just because you have a splash block or drain hose, does not mean that they are working properly.
